The Velvet Javelina is a complete reimagination of a dated seven-bedroom home into a one-of-a-kind luxury short-term rental that embraces the spirit of Sedona through bold, playful, and highly intentional design.
Rather than simply updating finishes, this renovation focused on rethinking how every square foot of the home could better serve the guest experience. A massive load-bearing wall was removed to transform the once-compartmentalized living space into an open, inviting gathering area that naturally flows into the kitchen and outdoor entertaining spaces. Existing windows were replaced with expansive sliding glass doors to maximize indoor-outdoor living and showcase the breathtaking surrounding red rock views. An awkwardly shaped bedroom was also redesigned to create a more functional and comfortable layout.
The original seven-bedroom floor plan was strategically reconfigured into six bedrooms, allowing one room to become a dedicated wellness space featuring a fully equipped gym and private sauna. Another bedroom was transformed into a custom-built six-bed bunk room designed specifically for families and large groups. Every bunk was thoughtfully integrated into the architecture and complemented with vintage postcard-inspired Sedona murals, creating a room that is both functional and unforgettable.
The home's identity was built around its namesake, The Velvet Javelina, taking inspiration from one of Sedona's most recognizable desert animals. Instead of treating the theme as a novelty, it became a cohesive design language carried throughout the property with custom javelina artwork, playful wallpaper installations, cactus-inspired patterns, and carefully curated details that make every room feel unique while maintaining a refined aesthetic. The result is a home that is whimsical, memorable, and unmistakably Sedona.
To elevate the property beyond a traditional vacation rental, several experience-driven spaces were incorporated throughout the renovation. A dedicated movie theater creates the perfect setting for family movie nights, while a hidden arcade and game room adds an element of surprise and discovery that guests of all ages enjoy. Every addition was intentionally designed to increase both functionality and the overall guest experience.
The exterior underwent an equally dramatic transformation. What was once a simple backyard became a resort-inspired retreat centered around Sedona's incredible landscape. A custom pool and integrated spa were positioned to frame the surrounding red rock views, while two separate fire pit lounges create inviting gathering spaces throughout the property. Additional amenities include a scenic rock-viewing area, giant outdoor chess, a playground, a putting green, and a mini soccer field. Existing trees were carefully trimmed to open sightlines and enhance the property's natural connection to the surrounding rock formations, making the landscape itself an integral part of the design.
The Velvet Javelina was designed to stand apart in the competitive short-term rental market by creating an experience guests cannot find anywhere else. Every structural change, architectural improvement, custom detail, and amenity was selected with purpose—balancing luxury, functionality, entertainment, and a strong sense of place.
